Requested Post . . . (My First!) Recommended Books for a Six Year Old Boy

My boy hasn't been six for over a decade, but I got a request (Wow! My first!) to recommend some books to read with a six year old boy. So here are some books that we have read over the years that my son AND daughters enjoyed:

Redwall by Brian Jacques

This was definitely my Boy's "hook book"  . . . the book that helped him decide that reading was worth the effort it took. He may have been seven years old when we discovered this series, and it has been a huge part of our family's literary life. There are many books in the series, that don't necessarily need to be read in order, but there are recurring characters that are fun to see popping up in the many different stories. It may be a bit scary for some sensitive six year olds, but for my swashbuckling boy, it was a true hit. The audio books are fabulous. When he was about eight years old, I would have The Boy listen on an iPod with a slowed narrator speed while he followed along in is own book. It helped with speed and comprehension, and the story was compelling enough that he was begging to do it every day!

The Saturdays

How to Train Your Dragon

I liked the movie, I really did. But the book is almost always better. (And it was quite different from the movie plot as well.)

The Great Brain

The Chocolate Touch

Freckle Juice

Fudge books by Judy Blume

Bunnicula

Flat Stanley

Magic Tree House

ABC Mysteries

Little House on the Prairie: Farmer Boy

Boxcar Children

My Father's Dragon

Stone Fox!!!!

Okay, so I'm cheating here a little bit . . .

The following are books that have influenced my life immensely, and yet I've never read them. (I have read parts of some of them.) My husband owns and teaches an LSAT prep course (and is fabulous at it, if you know anyone who wants to go to law school and needs to take the LSAT (www.acetestprep.com). So, I'm hoping that when his office manger goes through my blog to buy the books for his class, I will have a new source of income (through the amazon.com associates program) to (somewhat) support my amazon habit!
